A wine’s finest ingredient is the honesty of the man who produces it.
From “La montagna di fuoco” by Salvo Foti
Vinupetra is an Etna DOC red wine, from the Calderara vineyards in the Feudo di Mezzo area of Castiglione di Sicilia (Etna North), 700m above sea level. It is made from the local grape varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and Francisi. The vineyard, extending over 0.5 hectares, is around 100 years old and planted according to the Etnean alberello (bush-training) system in a 1m x 1m scheme, equivalent to 10,000 vines per hectare. It is cultivated by hand and with the help of Ciccio the mule. No refrigeration, yeasts or filtration are used in the wine making process. Decanting and bottling follow the phases of the moon.
